Connecting Your Friendship Lamp at College

Bringing your LuvLink Friendship Lamp to college? That’s awesome — we know how special it is to stay connected with your people, even from a dorm room. Getting your lamp set up on campus WiFi can be a little different than at home, but don’t worry — we’ve made this guide to help you through it step by step.

First Things First: Register Your Lamp’s MAC ID

Before anything else, you’ll need to give your school’s IT department the lamp’s MAC ID so they can add it to the list of allowed devices on the network. This is called “whitelisting,” and most colleges require it for smart devices to connect properly.

Once your lamp’s MAC ID is registered, you’ll be able to connect to the campus WiFi as usual.

Where Do I Find the MAC ID?

The MAC ID is printed on a small sticker on the base of your Friendship Lamp. It looks like a string of letters and numbers (something like 3AF21C779B00) and labeled “MAC ID.”

If you're unsure you're reading it right, just take a quick photo of the base and send it to us through our contact form. We’ll help double-check it for you!

Setting Up Your Lamp

Once your MAC ID is registered with your school's network:

  1. Plug your Friendship Lamp into a power outlet.
  2. Follow the steps in the LuvLink App Setup Guide to connect it to WiFi.

Lamp Stuck on Purple? Here’s What to Check

If your lamp is stuck glowing purple during setup, it usually means it's having trouble connecting. Here’s what to check:

✅ Your lamp's MAC ID has been successfully registered with the college IT department.

✅ The network you’re connecting to is a 2.4GHz WiFi network (LuvLink Friendship Lamps do not support 5GHz).

Still Stuck? Try This Workaround:

  1. Move the lamp out of range of the college WiFi — this should return it to dim red setup mode. You could plug it into a power source off-campus or by connecting it to your computer temporarily to observe the color change.
  2. Connect your lamp to a mobile hotspot using the setup process in the app.
  3. Once successfully connected to the hotspot, unplug the lamp and bring it back to your college room.
  4. It should now recognize the college WiFi — as long as the MAC ID has been approved — and connect automatically.
